Citron, North Carolina

While looking up Clinton, North Carolina on the map, we discovered there's a town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina named Citron.  We had to check it out.  This place was so small that a park ranger at a nearby state park had never heard of it.  But he was able to tell us how to get there because it is on the NC map.  We drove and drove and almost gave up.  This place was fairly rural.  You can't find it on Map Quest.
We did have trouble locating the place.
Its the boonies

Before giving up and heading back, we stopped at this gas station to ask where Citron was.  We asked, "Do you know where Citron is?"
The answer was  "You're in it".

The general store

This is the general store in Citron, NC.  The guy that owned the
store told us that a lot of the locals don't know the town was
named Citron.  It had been swallowed up by a nearby town.
But some of the old timers knew the place is named Citron

When we asked him how the town got its name, he said he
didn't know, but his mom probably did. He told us to go
across the street and knock on his mother's door.
He thought she'd know how the town got its name.

Just Like Kroger
This is Rachel looking around the general store for a post card saying
"Greetings from Citron".  There were no such postcards.

I was hoping to take a picture of us under the street sign that said
"Welcome to Citron N.C.".  There was no such sign.

Rachel didn't notice the deer heads on the wall.  Isn't this just like the
grocery store in your town?
General Store Mom This is the general store owner's Mom. She didn't know how Citron got its
name either so she looked up a friend who did know.  He said around 80
years ago, the town was named Citi.  Then they wanted to put in a post
office but  thought it would  be confusing to have a Citi post office so they
named the place Citron.

I was hoping the town was named after some long lost relative and we'd
get to meet his descendents.  No luck.  We were the only Citrons in Citron.

The post office is gone now but we found a listing of all the postmasters from 1922 to 1955.

There's probably not much to do on Saturday night.
the locals
These friendly folks didn't mind me telling them I was there to reclaim my town.

Here's the local crop:  Christmas Trees.
 Xmas trees grown here
In 2005 one of these trees was the National Christmas Tree on the mall in Washington D.C.
